Intermediate psychedelic integration, HArm Reduction, and ketamine support

As psychedelic use increases and FDA review of multiple psychedelic substances is pending in the coming months, it is ever more urgent that the helping professions build competence to support clients who are drawn to these substances and these emerging treatments. Most clinicians likely have some clients who use psychedelics or ketamine, and there are ways in which we can help them to make use of such experiences while reducing unnecessary risks. Participants will learn additional information about supporting clients during the ‘integration’ phase of psychedelic experiences (after use of a substance), including considerations for increased neuroplasticity, powerful insights, reappraisal or narratives and experiences, and re-opening of the critical developmental window that often occur after such experiences. Participants will learn to identify warning signs and opportunities for growth during integration. Furthermore, they will learn appropriate interventions and recognizing limits of their competence in addressing challenging or destabalizing reactions to psychedelics. A harm reduction approach will also be provided to assess clients when there is the opportunity to discuss psychedelics with them prior to their psychedelic use. This will also include identifying risk and protective factors. Lastly, this training will fill in gaps in knowledge about different modalities of ketamine treatment through discussion.

All content will be made relevant to both ketamine and other non-approved psychedelics. Participants will also received a brief overview of pending psychedelics currently in FDA clinical trials, including needs of the professions to adapt to these pending new medicines.
