Join us for a creative, embodied experience that explores the synergy of somatic art practice and mindful movement.
Please note that this will take the place of our Monthly Open Art Studio in October!
This workshop blends sensorimotor art and yoga practices. We will explore the terrain of the body through grounding yogic practices of movement and breath. We will translate those experiences through mark making on paper, creating a record of sensation and the impact of movement, breath, and attunement to ourselves.
We will make marks on paper, make shapes with our bodies, and make marks on paper again to witness visual evidence of the impact of movement.
Workshop Overview
Theme:
Listening to the Body, Expressing the Self
Duration: 3 hours
Date: Sunday, October 18th, 2026, 11am-2pm
Audience:
Open to all levels—no prior experience in art, yoga, or therapy required. Ideal for individuals seeking stress relief, emotional resilience, or a deeper connection to their body and creativity.
Question:
What happens when staying present with whatever feeling comes up in the body? What do you notice when you use movement practices to shift or regulate those feelings?
What to bring:
Please bring slippers or socks to change into from your street shoes.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, and bring anything else that helps you feel comfortable during your practice.
Bring a mat or towel you can move on.
Cost:
Classes are offered on a $15–$25 sliding scale for the general public. Existing Sana Community Care Fund clients may also be eligible for a discounted rate. If you are an existing Sana client, please email sana@sanahealingcollective.org to inquire about available discounts.
Our sliding-scale model allows participants to contribute at a level that works for their circumstances. Paying toward the higher end of the range helps make it possible for others to participate at a lower cost. In this way, each person's contribution becomes part of a larger practice of community care and collective wellness.
Space is limited and advanced registration is required.
Facilitators:
Jean Edrada (300hr+ RYT) has been teaching yoga for more than 11 years throughout Chicagoland and beyond. Jean approaches yoga as an invitation to listen inward and develop a deeper relationship with yourself rather than as a practice of achieving a particular pose or physical ideal.
Jean believes that we are each our own best teacher and that an innate wisdom lives within each of us to guide our healing and growth. Her classes encourage participants to cultivate awareness, connect with the breath, and explore both strength and softness through mindful movement.
Valery Shuman, ATR-BC, LCPC is a licensed clinical professional counselor and board-certified registered art therapist, specializing in working with people who want to examine their relationships with themselves, with others, and with substances. Valery works from a harm reduction framework that is nonjudgmental about substance use or other stigmatized behaviors, and focused on exploring the benefits and costs of those behaviors in order to reduce harms and maximize benefits. She believes that relationship is the vehicle for change and focuses on the development of a respectful, collaborative relationship with therapy clients. Valery also offers psychedelic integration and pre- and post-ritual counseling, helping people to leverage various modes of expression to share and make sense of their experiences of non-ordinary states of consciousness and to walk them meaningfully into their daily lives. Together we will weave the insights from your experience into the tapestry of your life. Using metaphor, exploring connections, and navigating liminal spaces allows us to become the architects of our lives.
