Led by Michael Applegate, ATR, LCPC, a disabled U.S. Navy veteran and art therapist, this 2.5-hour workshop is designed specifically to support veterans and their caregivers through education, creativity, and community connection. Rooted in both lived experience and clinical expertise, Michael will guide participants through an informative and expressive exploration of psychedelic-assisted therapy and its role in the healing process for veterans navigating trauma, transition, and personal growth.
During the first hour, attendees will receive accessible, up-to-date education on psychedelic-assisted therapy, including current research findings, evidence-based applications, and a review of the conditions for which these treatments show the most promise. We will discuss emerging access pathways, including clinical trials, legal therapeutic programs, and community-based treatment options. Michael will also introduce the ways art therapy can be integrated into psychedelic-assisted therapy to promote emotional processing, insight, and grounding. This portion of the workshop will include an overview of ongoing legislative efforts and policy changes related to psychedelic medicine, helping participants understand both the opportunities and limitations of the current landscape.
In the second hour, we will transition into an art-making session. Participants will be invited to visually explore their personal experiences with psychedelic therapy, reflect on their healing journeys, or express questions and hopes if they are new to this modality. No prior art experience is required—materials and gentle guidance will be provided, and the focus will be on expression rather than artistic skill.
The final thirty minutes of the workshop will be devoted to open discussion, offering space for collective reflection, community connection, advocacy, integration, and mutual support among veterans and caregivers.
